Prof. Hui's Virtual Aquarium Exhibits at the Hong Kong Science Museum

Jan 2005

Prof. KC Hui's Virtual Aquarium will be exhibited for 3 months starting Dec 17, 2004 in the New Science Corners of the Hong Kong Science Museum.

The Virtual Aquarium system is a computer system for simulating an underwater environment. Users wearing passive polarized eye-glasses will be able to observe stereoscopic images of dolphins or other sea creatures swimming around. The Virtual Aquarium system is constructed with a low cost multi-screens stereoscopic projection system, and adopted a curve-pair based freeform modelling technique for simulating dolphin motions. Conventional multi-screens virtual reality systems require the use of special hardware for synchronizing the images on the screens. This setup uses a client/server approach for the synchronization. Motions of the dolphins and other sea creatures can be adjusted by using mouse input, keyboard input, or low cost optical tracking techniques. Visitors can experience an underwater environment without getting into water by enjoying the three-dimensional Virtual Aquarium Demonstration.
