ACAE PhD Student Won The Vice Chancellor's
Cup for Student Entrepreneurship Competition
27 Jan 2005
Mr. Guangyi SHI, a first year PhD
student of the Centre
for Micro and Nano Systems, along with a team of
MBA students, won the Vice Chancellor's
Cup for Student Entrepreneurship (VCCE) Competition
on January 22, 2005. Their team, with a business
plan and presentation to market the "Wizard
Marker" (a MEMS-based motion sensing technology
device under development by the Centre for Micro and
Nano Systems), beat out 21 teams from CUHK to win the
competition. Faculty advisors to this team are Prof.
Wen J. Li (Engineering) and Prof.
Hugh Thomas (Business).
Judges (prominent HK Venture Capitalists,
IT specialist, and representatives from the Innovation
and Technology Commission) selected as the winner the
plan that presents the most attractive investment opportunity.
The team will now represent CUHK in the coming summer
to compete at the global level with some of the most
prominent MBA programs in the world:
This is the second year in
a row that an ACAE PhD student won the business plan
competition. Last year, Dr. Alan LAM (obtained his PhD
degree from ACAE in August 2004) of the Centre for Micro
and Nano Systems also represented CUHK in the world-famous
Moot Corp competition. Dr. LAM has since gone on to
start Sengital Ltd.,
a high-tech company at the Hong
Kong Science and Technology Parks using MEMS motion
sensing technologies for consumer electronics applications.
