B. Eng. in IDE (2003-04 and before)

Note: This programme is offered for students admitted in the academic years from 2000-01 to 2003-04. Starting from the 2004-05 admission, the IDE discipline will be susumed into the ACE programme as one of its specialization streams.

With the on-going transformation of the Hong Kong industry into a more design-original and knowledge-intensive nature, the growing importance of technological innovation and innovative design increasingly demands that engineers be equipped with creative thinking and design skills. The introduction of the Innovation and Design Engineering Programme is to prepare engineering graduates to face the new challenges. Design engineering concerns itself with the conception and design of products for the benefit of society. A major characteristic of the Programme is the integration of engineering and artistic design knowledge. With the advance in computer and information technology, new product designs are no longer restricted to physical commodities, but also include innovative applications of computing and information technology. The philosophy adopted in the Innovation and Design Engineering Programme is to maintain a balance in engineering, computing, and design techniques so as to prepare students with an inter-disciplinary educational experience aimed at the resolution of functional, aesthetic, manufacturing and human values issues to create successful designs.

The objective of the Programme is to develop the ability of students in perceiving the need of the society, and to translate the needs into products using creative and analytical design methods. Graduates of the Programme are expected to be able to design not only the outlook of a product, but also the functional components of the product. The Programme will cover three major areas: fundamental knowledge in engineering, innovation and creative design techniques, fundamentals of computing techniques and applications in product design.

Graduates of the Programme are expected to develop careers in product and system design of inter-disciplinary fields. As a result of their multi-facet education, they will be able to excel in their works and, in time, to advance to leadership positions in either existing corporation, or depending on their talents and self-development, enterprises of their own. They will be engaging in a market which requires ever increasing number of advanced technological and innovative ideas to be competitive, where their inter-disciplinary training will be indispensible. These include companies which conduct design and manufacturing in the related fields of electronics, consumer products, toys, video games, graphics, animation, web page design, and more. With their training, our graduates will be able to assume the roles of a product designer, responsible for new and improved design of products, or a system designer, responsible for an efficient overall architecture of the process and composite systems.
